Adama Drinking Water Treatment Plant Upgrade & Rehabilitation

Adama Drinking Water Treatment Plant

Upgrade of plant capacity from 24,480 To 43,700 m³/Day

Adama town is located in the rift Valley of tropical climatic zone, about 100km South East of Finfinne city. It is situated in the Great Rift Valley on relatively flat lowland between two mountain ridges. The raw water intake (Awash River) is located 11 km North-West of the town and 3 km downstream of Qoqa Dam.

Adama town has been continuously growing in both social and economic aspects. Some of the major factors, special attention has given by the Regional Government to the extent of restructuring the town to the higher level of special zonal administration.

Drinking water supply of ADAMA catered by Awash River based drinking water treatment plant constructed by M/s. BIWATER – South Africa in 2000 of handling capacity 24,480 m³/day. However, due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, a significant growth in population made during last years.

In order to meet supply demand for the population of about 373,550 (in 2011 inclusive of ADAMA & its vicinity), M/s. Oromia Water Bureau board took keen interest to cater to the increase in water demand requirements, awarded the project tender package – ICB 06 / 2014 for Drinking Water Plant rehabilitation and upgrade to 43,700 m³/day in June 2014.

PROJECT PROCESS

  • River water intake with pretreatment
  • Pre-treatment tank
  • Rectangular clarification units
  • Sand filtration units
  • Clear water storage and pumping station
  • Centralized chemical solution preparation facility
  • Sludge recirculation pumping stations
  • Sludge drying bed

Water Treatment Plant upgrade is based on replacement of electromechanical equipment, installation of tube settlers in clarifiers, construction of new water treatment facilities and refurbishing existing ones, to increase the capacity of the plant from 24,480 m³/d to 43,700 m³/d. To improve the function and the sustainability of individual units and to ease the operation of the plant is also one of the important points.
